Notes from Parent University #2
Some of the major happenings in the Northeast Learning Community this semester:
- Educational accomplishments: based on recently released CCRPI scores, there are NO failing schools in the NELC. No other learning community can claim this.
- There are many opportunities to enjoy Arts programs within the NELC over the coming weeks. There are drama productions, musical performances and numerous Reflections award-recipients.
- There are also many Athletic events occurring throughout the NELC: baseball, lacrosse, track & field, tennis, just to name a few. For those of you with elementary and middle school-aged students: take your kids out to one or more of these Athletic or Arts events. Get them excited about the community that they are a part of. The older kids love to see the younger ones cheering them on.
- The Whole Child. Please be aware of the pressures facing our students, particularly in the coming weeks with Milestones, AP exams and End of Course assessments. Pay attention to your kids. Ask them how they are doing. Take them to one of the fun events listed above. Give them chances to decompress.
Jonathan Adel and Erin Nusnbaum gave an informative and interactive presentation on Project Based Learning (PBL).
Presentation - PBL.
There are 16 schools within the NELC implementing PBL activities within their instruction.
Some of the benefits of PBL discussed include:
- PBL helps students learn the process of Problem Solving.
- It is collaborative, helping students learn how to work in groups and interact with others.
- Projects are shared publicly in a variety of ways.
- It helps get kids college and career ready.
- It develops various life skills, which directly correlates to the NELCs focus on the WHOLE child.
- It is student-centered.
- Research has found that ‘doing’ is better than pure ‘lecture’ teaching.
- There are real-life connections with community members.
